Quote of the Day.....

I met a man last Friday morning that has encouraged me to follow my dreams instead of taking them away. This post is dedicated to him...he knows who he is and I thank him.

Find something you love to do and you'll never have to work a day in your life.

One More Sleep....

With only one more sleep to go, I can't believe that this is the view I will be waking up to every morning. Our move to the Sunshine Coast has been a long awaited journey and now that it is here, well I just have to pinch myself to make sure it is real. The packing has been tedious (ok have to admit that my amazing husband has been doing most of the packing), the cleaning a total pain in the ass but no doubt worth it especially when I am sipping that first glass of vino around the pool whilst my husband makes pizza in the pizza oven and young Miss Ruby is running amuck in her new backyard. I will miss Brisbane as I leave behind some wonderful and loyal friends yet I will still be a permanent fixture at Young Designers Markets and the fabulous BrisStyle Markets. Although if you're ever up the coast be sure to pop in and say hi at the Caloundra Markets on Bulcock Street as I will be having my first stall there on Sunday 13th June.

Moving On and Moving Up......

In only 2 short weeks the Smiley's will be making the move up to the beautiful Sunshine Coast for a change of lifestyle. This long awaited move has been 6 months in the planning and I can't believe it is finally in our sights. I still have every intention of being an active member of Brisbane markets but am also excited about participating in some great little markets on the coast. I will keep you all posted as to the progress of the move and settling in along with the launch of Mrs Smiley's Lockets new website. Best I start packing!!

Always Two Sides To A Story.......

Someone once told me there is "no such thing as an original idea" this in turn obviously made them feel less guilty about copying ideas directly from others.
It is with great sadness that I feel the need to write this post however due to recent events and blogs, there are a few things that I need to get of my chest. I love what I do and the jewellery I create. Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone wearing one of my lockets or when they choose a sheet music locket because the lyrics hold a special meaning. But when someone directly takes one of my ideas to use as their own and then makes a mockery of my feelings, well that just breaks my heart. I am protective of the things I do and create as I don't want to see our beloved handmade markets turned into a carbon copy where everything is the same and if that causes conflict then so be it. Some may consider it just a "craft" but I am proud of what I do because at the end of the day, I can sit back and look at my creations knowing they are an original idea.......

The Sewing Woman

I just had to introduce this locket to all you keen sewers out there and also for you not so keen sewers like myself (I actually struggle to sew on a button) I have no doubt you'll still appreciate the fine detail of this beautiful postage stamp. This 1982 stamp is from Turkey and features a painting by Ibrahim Calli called "Sewing Woman". I have put the stamp on one of my vintage brass lockets to create a real signature piece.

The Bangle Bar

After successfully launching my new "Bangle Bar" six weeks ago at February's YDM, I thought I should get my act together and show them off on my blog.

Not only is there the vintage sheet music bangles which stems from my lockets but I have also used Japanese Papers, unique printed linen, exerts from the Pygmalion 1913 play book and am now experimenting with some vintage wallpaper.

I will be at the Portside Boutique Markets this Sunday for the first time and I am very excited about being part of these markets.

Locket Giveaway

As the first giveaway for the year, I thought I would offer a very special locket that will no doubt touch everyones heart. On this locket I have used a gorgeous postage stamp from Republique Rwandaise (Rwanda), it was issued in 1975 for International Women's Year and is one of a kind. The brass 46 x 38mm oval locket is at least 35 years old as it is from a secret stash from the 1970's.

To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment about what being a woman means to you and follow my blog if you're not already. This giveaway will be drawn at the end of March.

Here's mine- Being a woman in today's society is about putting everyone else first i.e. children, husband, pets and then sneaking away with a bottle of wine, a bath full of bubbles and the best chocolates you can afford and NOT sharing them with anybody!!

After the horrific earthquake that hit Haiti on 12th January 2010, many wonderful organisations have gotten together to raise funds to help provide some relief for those effected by the devastation.

Hearts for Haiti is an Etsy collective of donated items from hundreds of Etsy shops to raise money to rebuild Haiti. All proceeds from this shop (minus Etsy fees and Paypal fees) go directly to Doctors Without Borders .

Please take the time to check out Hearts for Haiti where a number of our BrisStylettes have also donated items. Lets get behind this great cause and lend our support where we can.
